A Call to My Lovely Lurkers

I see you!

I know you are out there. I can see when you stop by and then disappear into the blogosphere. Such a shame because I am a TOTAL sucker for new blogs and love to check other blogs out.

The top 10 reasons why you love to lurk (and my response):

10) You are lazy (So get in bed and comment then.)
9) You have carpal tunnel (I say no pain no gain!)
8) You are shy. (why do we all blog? Can you say introverts!)
7) You have nothing to say (great, b/c bloggers talk about nothing so you'll fit in just fine! Besides we're not looking for Oscar speeches here people!)
6) You are a spy. (If so, you better find out more about statcounter)
5) You always wanted to be a spy (me too! But I can't see you anyway.)
4) Your name is Tom (get it...peeping?)
3) You can't find the "post comment" button (I creatively call mine - shout outs)
2) You are just sooooooo busy (aren't we all?)
1) I'm not as funny as I think I am (I know hard to believe)

Well, Mother Reader and Lee Wind have come up with a way to get you lurkers out of the blogger closet.

The 2010 Comment Challenge to get you Starting Today (Friday, January 8), and running through Thursday, January 28, 2010. The goal is to comment on at least five kidlitosphere blogs a day. Keep track of your numbers, and report in on Fridays with Mother Reader or Lee.

A prize package will be involved, drawing from among the bloggers who reach the 100 Comment Mark (five comments a day for twenty-one days with one day free of comment charge).I hear some random door prizes might be available just for trying.

Every comment doesn’t have to be insightful and intellectual (trust me - my posts aren't!) It can be hard to think of something to say. But we don't care - just say "hi!" We die-hard bloggers love to meet new people. Also, when you make yourself heard, other bloggers may check out your blog. Can’t hurt your stats. Plus, you’ve made that blogger’s day a little bit brighter. Maybe you’ll make a new BFF — Blog Friend Forever.

I know, the whole thing sounds awesome. Ready to join us? Then sign up. And tell all your friends, because that’s kind of, like, the point.

To kick it off, whoever comments on this announcement will get thrown into (not literally) a drawing for an author marketing book! BTW - the only rule I have is only Followers can win. I reward my delurkers. :) Plus that means I can at least keep up with you after you go silent again in 21 days!!! :)

So talk away!

I look forward to meeting you all and making some new friends.

Ahh, the comment challenge lives on! I love that. I drop by all the time and admit to several of those lurking excuses. ;)

My catchpa is CORNNO. What? You talkin' to me?

For a moment I thought kidlitosphere was a new number. A very large number. I love your list.

Have a fab weekend!

Hehe, I follow and I think usually I comment, or I try to. Love your blog, Shelli!

lisanowak said...

Okay, Shelli, you know me from last year, but I haven't been commenting lately. Just coming over, looking around, and quietly going away since I can't think of anything to say. I've been blogging again, so stop by and say hello. I'm gonna hold you to that!

Jackee said...

How about always having a kid in my arms for a reason? Because you know, it makes it hard to type and sometimes they like to help. Which makes it hard to sound intelligent when I have a line of dddddddddd's in my comments.

But still, no excuse. I know. :)

Damn!! And here I thought I was completely hidden by this column.

Hummpphh.

Thanks for explaining the Comment Challenge. I'd heard it mentioned but I didn't know the details. Yay for blogging/commenting fun!

Ironically, I signed up for this challenge yesterday because I wanted to get more involved in the writing and book blogging communities. But I didn't fully read the logistics. I'm writing a novel for adults and I don't follow many kid lit blogs. lol. Fortunately, I do write for kids at my day job. This Will certainly be a challenge for me now! haha.

Hey, this sounds like a great idea! :D

HI, new friend here.

Gotta go for now, I'm not supposed to be blogging on the weekends... I can't help it sometimes, I'm addicted to blogging.

My cover is blown! You've found out my secret spy identity!

jessjordan said...

Hmmm ... But what if we really ARE tired, lazy, busy introverts? Can we post something incoherent, like "Mrrhaahwaaaaa" 5x a day, or will that just be super creepy and end up getting us blocked?

Nisa said...

Hilarious! I loved your ten! It's a good thing intelligent answers aren't required or I'd be in trouble! As it is, whew!

this is going to be a tough one to follow, because i have t go immerse myself in an mfa residency for the next 11 days and won't be near my computer enough to be doing things i need to do (prep for lecture, paperwork for graduation, etc) much less be leaving comments.

but i do lurk because i'm trying to get a some sense of of what to expect once i manage to get a book published and out there. i suppose that falls under #7 above.

but come next month i won't have any more excuses, so i'll be back!

I come to your blog all the time, but only comment every once in awhile. It's a GREAT blog, BTW.

Tony Eldridge said...

I love it!! I just found your blog, but I bet I'll be lurking around for quite a while! You have a very fun, informative blog.

Corey Schwartz said...

Wow. A lot of people actually delurked. i may have to try a post like this on my blog!

Tiana Lei said...

I think I just like the title of "lurker" which is why I don't comment often. I mean, you have to admit it's a fun-sounding label. Alas, you have proven to me that "de-lurker" is even cooler sounding. Consider me reformed.

Denise Jaden said...

Okay, I needed a challenge to get me in-communicado on the blogosphere again! I'm a day late, but I guess that just means I have to traipse around ten blogs today...

Lindsey Marck said...

i like the commenting ideas...made me smile when you commented on mine. good luck in the contest!

Jennie Englund said...

Thanks for the link to the
contest--I'm in! Yours was the first blog I hit up today.

A Comment Challenge...that's hilarious. I'm in. A marketing book is almost as tempting as milk chocolate.

ann foxlee said...

Hooray, I love the comment challenge! I've been on a mission the past week to be more active, make more comments, and find new blogs to follow, so this is right up my alley!

Heather Kelly said...

Shelli--I signed up for at Lee's website, without really thinking that it would be much of anything at all--but it has already introduced me to some wonderful kidlit bloggers that I wouldn't have know about otherwise. It's good stuff.

Jessie Oliveros said...

Since I don't have time to comment even five a day I'm not entering, but I am commening on your blog because I like you. Only I think we are already friends, maybe even BFF's.

Shelli said...

This challenge is already killing me - Im finding so many great blogs - thanks for commenting!

DELURKERS rock!!!

Laura Lutz said...

Fine, fine. You caught me lurking and I have crawled out of my Bloglines hole to comment directly. There, happy?

For the record, I'm a spy and now my cover is blown.

Danyelle said...

Great idea!

I'm not sure if I count as a lurker or not. I've commented in the past, but don't as much now, mostly because I have so many blogs to visit, I often stop by to browse, but don't always leave comments. I don't do as much blog time lately because I'm in a writing slump. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to do the "writing" thing. What are the chances that I actually will get published anyway. ~sigh~ But I love writing and I love the writing community so I'm still feeling the urge to at least browse.

that's my excuse.

Katie said...

This is fab! I am shocked by all the peeps who have come out of the shadows!!

Cool idea Shellibean!

Vonna said...

Hi Shelli, great blog! I'm having fun checking out all the blogs for the comment challenge.

Nancy Kelly Allen said...

Love how you're getting people to comment on your blog. Great idea.

Sarah said...

You're right, I've always wanted to be a spy! Any other lurkers have tips on that profession in case this writing thing doesn't work out? :)

Heidi Willis said...

very clever!

well, I've followed you a long time, and commented sporadically, and we sort of know each other...

I don't consider myself a lurker so much as a drive-by reader. If I have something meaningful to add, I try to do that. But you've got lots of meaningful readers who usually get to the good comments first. :)

And I admit to just being busy. If I could spend all day reading blogs I would... but then I'd never get my writing done.

It's a very sad conundrum!!

Shelli said...

wow - look how many new friends I made. This was awesome - Thanks guys!
